“Calcutta University’s GLIIF initiative empowers women entrepreneurs”

In an impactful stride toward structural women’s economic empowerment in eastern India, the Global Links Impact Investment Forum (GLIIF) was convened at the University of Calcutta in strategic collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata and the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College, Florida. Directed by Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee, Professor of Business Management, the flagship initiative was engineered to systematically bridge the critical gap between academic business research, institutional capital access, and hands-on venture incubation for grassroots women entrepreneurs.

“Women entrepreneurs across Bengal possess immense resilience and craftsmanship, yet they persistently face systemic barriers when seeking formal credit, institutional supply networks, and scalable business modeling. GLIIF was built precisely to dismantle these bottlenecks through sustained mentoring, investor readiness, and university-backed capacity building.” — Prof. Sharmistha Banerjee, Forum Director

The forum served as a high-visibility pitch and scale-up platform for early-stage ventures that had undergone intensive capacity building. Emerging founders presented detailed expansion roadmaps before an evaluation panel of angel investors, commercial bankers, and enterprise catalysts. Among the featured enterprises were Sana Khan (sustainable handcrafted jute products), Alifia Rahman (commercial cloud kitchen operations), and Arshia Ahmed (artisan gourmet confectionery).

In addition to financing clinics, the initiative established an ongoing student-fellowship model where Calcutta University postgraduate management scholars work directly with women founders on bookkeeping, regulatory compliance, branding, and digital commerce. Representatives from the U.S. Consulate commended the program as a stellar embodiment of bilateral educational collaboration fostering inclusive local prosperity.

“Muslim women and others get tips to scale up business at Kolkata event”

In a transformative workshop blending grassroots community outreach with advanced business diagnostics, dozens of women entrepreneurs—prominently featuring founders from traditional Muslim households—converged in Kolkata to acquire practical scaling strategies and financial leadership skills. The workshop was co-hosted by the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata in close partnership with the University of Calcutta.

Conducted under the joint framework of the Global Links Impact Investment Forum (GLIIF) and Caterfly (founded by Prof. Sharmistha Banerjee, Prof. Arijita Dutta, and Anuj Sharma), the session partnered with Taajira, an influential platform led by Prof. Shabina Nishat Omar. Mentors worked one-on-one with attendees to demystify business registration, unit-level profitability, supply chain negotiations, and digital branding.

“Entrepreneurship among women cannot remain confined to the margins of informal survivalism. When we equip a woman founder with mastery over profit margins, GST compliance, and institutional micro-credit, we transform the economic sovereignty of an entire family and community.” — Prof. Sharmistha Banerjee, Keynote Address

Participants shared candid accounts of navigating cultural conservatism and systemic market exclusions while establishing self-reliant livelihoods. The organizers announced structured quarterly follow-up clinics, legal certification assistance, and dedicated digital marketing mentorship to ensure each venture transitions successfully into an organized commercial entity.

“US mentoring scheme to help female entrepreneurs in India”

In an extensive international feature published in The Guardian’s acclaimed Women in Leadership series, Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee, Professor of Business Management at the University of Calcutta, was spotlighted as the inaugural Indian scholar selected for the United States Department of State Global Links initiative, hosted at the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

Launched as a high-impact public-private partnership between the U.S. Secretary of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, Tupperware Brands, and Rollins College, Global Links operates on an innovative “train-the-trainer” pedagogical framework. Rather than offering temporary external assistance, the fellowship immerses business scholars in social enterprise design, clinical teaching methodologies, and CSR impact measurement, equipping them to build enduring community business incubators upon their return.

“India is witnessing historic economic change, yet millions of capable women lack access to structured business training, peer validation, and financial ecosystems to bring their enterprise concepts to life. Research clearly demonstrates that elevating female labor-force participation delivers direct, compounding dividends to household health, child education, and national GDP.” — Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee, to The Guardian

During her nine-month residency in the United States, Dr. Banerjee researched social enterprise incubators, designed specialized university curricula, and collaborated with executive leadership. Upon returning to Calcutta University, she institutionalized pioneering social entrepreneurship programs that have since trained hundreds of postgraduate students and directly mentored countless micro-enterprises across West Bengal.

“Tupperware Brands’ Global Links inaugural Indian Scholar Sharmistha Banerjee felicitated in Kolkata”

At a distinguished diplomatic reception hosted at the American Center in Kolkata, United States Consul General Craig Hall formally felicitated Professor Sharmistha Banerjee of the Department of Business Management, University of Calcutta, celebrating the triumphant completion of the Global Links fellowship and her subsequent pioneering rollout of social entrepreneurship education in eastern India.

The felicitation brought together leading consular officials, senior university leadership, industry stalwarts, and civil society advocates to honor the tangible social impact achieved through the fellowship. As the inaugural Indian scholar chosen for this bilateral program supported by the U.S. State Department and Tupperware Brands, Dr. Banerjee successfully introduced experiential social entrepreneurship coursework at Calcutta University, mobilizing graduate scholars to mentor grassroots women-led micro-enterprises.

“Professor Banerjee’s dedication exemplifies how global academic fellowships can transcend theoretical dialogue to generate lasting ground-level change. By connecting academic rigor with underprivileged women entrepreneurs, she has built an enduring bridge of empowerment across Kolkata.” — Craig Hall, U.S. Consul General in Kolkata

Speaking at the event, Dr. Banerjee reaffirmed her lifelong mission: to ensure higher education institutions step outside ivory towers and serve as real-world economic incubators for women whose entrepreneurship forms the backbone of the informal economy.

“University of Calcutta holds Management Seminar 2023 at Alipore Campus”

The Department of Business Management at the University of Calcutta organized its flagship annual academic symposium, Management Seminar 2023, at the Alipore Campus. The summit convened senior academics, corporate leaders, research scholars, and postgraduate management students for intensive deliberations on leadership adaptability, digital business ethics, and corporate sustainability in developing economies.

Serving as the faculty director and guiding force behind the symposium, Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee opened the proceedings with an inspiring keynote address examining how business schools must pivot to prepare students for rapid socio-technological disruption:

“Management departments cannot afford to remain insular. The contemporary curriculum must seamlessly integrate rigorous analytical frameworks with deep social empathy, training young managers who are equally equipped to evaluate boardroom mergers and empower grassroots supply chains.” — Prof. Sharmistha Banerjee, Director of Seminar

The technical sessions highlighted competitive research papers covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance, ethical AI deployment in marketing, and sustainable micro-enterprise growth. Prominent corporate dignitaries lauded the Department of Business Management for its rigorous seventy-year legacy of shaping ethical business leaders.
